This policy explains how we use cookies and similar technologies on our website (the “Site”), and the choices available to you. We follow PIPEDA’s requirement for meaningful consent and consider CASL’s rules for computer programs (including cookies).
What are cookies?
Cookies are small text files stored on your device by your browser. They help the Site function, remember preferences, and understand how visitors use pages. Some cookies are strictly necessary to operate the Site; others are optional (e.g., functional, analytics, advertising).
CASL note: For certain technologies (including cookies), CASL recognizes deemed express consent where a user’s conduct reasonably shows consent; nevertheless we implement a banner and preference controls to meet PIPEDA meaningful consent expectations.
Our purposes (why we use cookies)
- Strictly necessary: security, session management, load balancing, form submission.
- Functional (optional): remember language/region and basic user preferences.
- Analytics (optional): measure visits, pages, and performance to improve the Site.
- Advertising/retargeting (optional; default OFF): only if enabled in future, and only with consent.
PIPEDA expects clear, upfront explanations of purposes so that consent is meaningful.
Your choices (banner & preferences)
- On first visit, we display a cookie banner with: Accept all, Reject non-essential, and Manage preferences.
- In Manage preferences, you can toggle categories: Strictly Necessary (locked on), Functional, Analytics, Advertising.
- You can change/withdraw consent anytime using the “Cookie Preferences” link in our footer.
- Your browser also lets you block or delete cookies. Blocking strictly necessary cookies may affect functionality.
These layered disclosures and controls align with PIPEDA’s guidance on meaningful consent.
Analytics (Google Analytics 4)
If you opt in to Analytics, we use Google Analytics 4 (GA4) to understand site performance. Google states that GA4 does not log or store IP addresses, and provides region-based privacy controls (e.g., disabling Google signals, granular location and device data). We configure GA4 with privacy-forward settings and short data retention, and we only enable analytics after you consent.
Advertising (default OFF)
We do not enable advertising or retargeting cookies by default. If we ever introduce them, we will:
- present a clear opt-in in the banner/preferences;
- identify the third parties involved; and
- allow you to change your choices at any time.
Third-party cookies & international transfers
Some cookies (e.g., analytics) may be set by third parties. These providers may process data outside Canada; where that occurs, information can be subject to foreign laws. We use contractual and technical measures seeking protection comparable to Canadian standards, and we disclose purposes and risks so your consent remains meaningful.
Do Not Track & browser signals
Different browsers handle Do Not Track (DNT) and privacy signals inconsistently. We continue to improve support for browser-level controls. Regardless, you can always adjust consent using Cookie Preferences or your browser settings.
Children
Our Site targets homeowners and businesses, not children. We avoid using behavioural advertising techniques directed at minors and treat such tracking as high-risk. (If you believe a child has been tracked, contact us and we’ll address it promptly.)
How long we keep cookie data
Cookie lifespans vary by category and purpose (see the table below). We retain analytics data only for the configured period and keep consent records for accountability (good practice under PIPEDA’s principles).
Managing cookies (quick steps)
- Use our Cookie Preferences link in the footer to change settings.
- Use your browser’s help pages to block or delete cookies.
- If you clear cookies, you may need to reset your preferences.
Updates to this policy
We may update this policy (e.g., if we add a new tool). We’ll post changes here with an updated Effective date and, where appropriate, show a notice on the Site.
